Five Star WordPress Photography Themes

Why Use WordPress Photography Themes

Everyone is a photographer these days. Soon even your cat will be instragramming it without you. With the advent of digital photography, the development of a wide range of cameras for various markets (the MILCs, for instance), lower equipment prices, ‘how to’ books on every topic, phones and tablets with cameras, and image sharing social platforms (Flickr, Picasa, Instagram, Pinterest) image making has taken on a life of its own. Taking a picture has become a mere reflex, kind of like flipping out an umbrella when it rains. So how do you set yourself apart from knee-jerk shooters?

Social image sharing platforms are handy promotional tools, but they should only play a supporting role to your main web presence. Having your own space allows you to freely develop and express your personal vision. There’s no quicker and cheaper way to get that space than with WordPress and its many photography themes. With WordPress you can stay focused on your strength – photography, instead of toiling through muddy website building waters. It gives you control of your portfolio, so you can update frequently and easily, adding new images, latest news, and messages for your target audience.

While no theme is a replacement for a well crafted vision and extensive promotional efforts, having a polished and easy to maintain store front goes a long way in helping you succeed. Photography is one of my passions, so I do not approach the topic lightly. For this list, I’ve selected themes that I would use myself if I were to take my photography to the next level. I used the following criteria to evaluate every theme:

Ease of Use

Is the theme easy to navigate?
There’s nothing worse than a theme that scatters your content in a virtual labyrinth. Images zooming in out of nowhere, a mystery meat approach to navigation, chaotic album presentation – all very unpleasant features to be avoided at all costs.

Customization

Does the theme have lots of customization options?
This is especially important when managing the organization and presentation of your images.

Elegance

Is the theme easy on the eyes?
An effective photography theme must never compete with your photographs. I also tried to avoid themes with a very particular visual style, because you are more likely to get tired of it or outgrow it very quickly.

Responsiveness

Is the theme responsive?
A solid WordPress photography theme must be viewable on smart phones and tablets. There’s no question about that. If your site crashes on mobile devices, you’ll be losing a great share of potential viewers. Most themes on this list (8/10) are responsive.

Memorability

Is the theme memorable?
A memorable theme is not necessarily a loud theme, it is usually a theme with a logical structure that a user can quickly grasp. The quicker a user can feel at home on your site, the more he’ll use it, and the better he’ll remember it.

If I could answer ‘yes’ to all or most of the above, the theme made it to the list. So when it’s time to choose your WordPress photography theme you can rely on the following themes as solid alternatives. They have definitely earned their 5 stars.

Other Ideas for Your Photography Site

If you already have a WordPress site and are looking for a way to showcase your work, you may consider using a slider or gallery plugin to enhance your presentation.

If you are stuck for ideas or want to see which themes other photographers are using, you can always search for ‘photography’ related themes on WordPress by Example, a search engine for WordPress themes. You do not necessarily need to use a photo specific theme, but it does make the management and displaying of images much easier, since it is build with the photographer’s needs in mind.

You can also create a website straight out of Lightroom. There are tutorials out there on how to do this. I have not tested it out myself, so I can’t give an opinion on that. Besides, Lightroom use is beyond the scope of this post and this blog in general.

They used to say an image is worth a thousand words. But with the current image cornucopia forging a visual language of its own we’ll soon need something to stand for a thousand images. Something that much more memorable and extraordinary. Hope your images can be that something that eclipses the legions of uninspired contenders. Happy shooting.

PS: I’ll be adding new WordPress photography themes as I come across them, so check back every now and then for an update if you are looking for the latest photography themes.
